In the back corner of the bar, a vintage telephone hangs beside a vault door. Pick it up, someone answers, and the door unlocks to Needle & Thread, our speakeasy upstairs. There is no printed menu by design — tell your bartender what you like and every round is built from scratch.

A Capitol Hill Cocktail Bar Since 2009

Tavern Law sits in the 1919 Trace Lofts building at 1406 12th Avenue, on the Pike/Pine corridor in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. We take our name from the Pioneer Inn and Tavern Law of 1832.

Among the bars on Capitol Hill, we're the one with a library wall of leather-bound books, a vault door, and a speakeasy upstairs. The Golden Age of cocktails lived in dim bars and back rooms, and that history still shapes how we build a menu: classics measured and precise, seasonal drinks that lean into the flavors around us, and every syrup and bitter made in house.

Downstairs is the neighborhood bar — happy hour on Capitol Hill every day from 5 to 7, a gastropub dinner and cocktail menu with the kitchen open until 11, and walk-ins welcome. Upstairs, behind the vault door, is Needle & Thread, our Seattle speakeasy.

Before You Come In

What are your hours?
Both rooms are open every night, 5 PM to midnight. Happy hour runs daily 5 to 7 PM, and the kitchen stays open until 11.
Do you take walk-ins?
The downstairs bar is primarily walk-in. Needle & Thread upstairs is reservation-first, but we seat walk-ins when there's space — check in downstairs and have a drink while you wait.
What's the difference between Tavern Law and Needle & Thread?
Same building, two rooms. Tavern Law is the ground-floor cocktail bar and dining room, with a full menu and happy hour. Needle & Thread is the speakeasy upstairs behind a vault door, reached by picking up the telephone in the back of the bar, with no menu and cocktails built to your taste.
How do I reserve the speakeasy?
Needle & Thread takes reservations for parties of one to six, up to seven days out, on its own OpenTable page. Tavern Law downstairs books separately. Both are on the reservations page.
When is happy hour, and what's on it?
Every day, 5 to 7 PM. Old Fashioned $12, Negroni $13, Margarita $12, Dirty Martini $10, house wine $7, Asahi $5, plus happy hour prices on popcorn chicken, mac & cheese, and the Tavern Burger. See the full happy hour menu.
What makes Tavern Law different from other Capitol Hill bars?
A speakeasy upstairs behind a vault door, reached by telephone. A full gastropub kitchen open until 11, so it's dinner as well as drinks. And happy hour every single day, weekends included. We've been pouring on 12th Avenue since 2009.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Many dishes are marked gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegetarian, and the cocktail menu flags nuts, dairy, gluten, and raw egg. It's a shared kitchen, so tell your server about serious allergies and we'll steer you safely.
Is there a dress code or age policy?
No dress code — neat-casual is perfect. Both rooms are 21+. Bring a US or Canadian government-issued ID, or a passport for international guests.
Where are you, and where do I park?
1406 12th Ave, in the 1919 Trace Lofts building on Capitol Hill. Street parking on 12th Ave, a garage next door, and rideshare drop-off at the front door. The First Hill Streetcar at Broadway & Pike is a short walk.
Can you host a private event or holiday party?
